The Additional Session Judge Fast Track Court No. 1 has found that Dr AK Unmesh, associate professor at the Thrissur Government Medical College, is guilty of giving false evidence in the court during the trial of the Soumya case.
Accepting the petition of Malayalavedi state president George Vattukulam, Additional District and Sessions Judge KN Raveendra Babu directed that a written complaint be filed before the Magistrate Court concerned against Dr Unmesh for having committed the offence punishable under section 193 of IPC. Proceedings in this regard will take place at the Wadakkanchery Magistrate Court. (Advocate CT Joffy appeared for George Vattukulam.)Dr Unmesh declined to react to the court order.Dr Praveen Lal Kuttichira, principal of the Medical College, said he had forwarded the details of the judgment to the state health department. The government has to take a decision on the issue. If a government doctor is punished in a criminal case, he will be dismissed from service.Advocate PS Easwaran, who appeared for Dr Unmesh, said that, the court found him guilty "prima facie only". He will get an opportunity at the Magistrate Court to prove hisinnocence. Based on this case, "he may or may not get suspension depending on a departmental inquiry." the lawyer added.He added the high-level probe panel of doctors who quizzed Dr Unmesh on October 14, regarding his court statement, is yet to reveal its report on the issue "as the inquiry is incomplete".Meanwhile, AIYF (All India Youth Federation) activists attacked Dr Unmesh's cabin in the Medical College, causing damages to articles worth Rs 15,000. The Peramangalam police reached the spot and arrested seven of the activists. They were booked under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act and late remanded in the Chavakkad sub-jail.
